MERCY IOWA CITY RECOGNIZED AS
“BLUE DISTINCTION CENTER” FOR ITS HEART CARE

Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa has identified Mercy Iowa City as one of 11 specialty centers for heart care in Iowa, called “Blue Distinction Centers.” This recognition is part of a nationwide program with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and other Blue Plans across the country.
The facilities selected meet or exceed certain criteria that demonstrate reliability in delivering care and better overall outcomes for patients. The criteria include nationally endorsed quality measures, developed in collaboration with medical experts and national organizations. The process for selection is based on clinical data supplied by the hospitals.
The Blue Distinction designation aims to create an unprecedented level of transparency for health care consumers and providers. Blue Distinction strengthens consumer engagement and provides partnerships through new specialty centers that offer the best practices and standards of care in cardiac care.
The process used to select Blue Distinction Centers is based on clinical data supplied by hospitals, and each facility’s structure, processes and care outcomes are evaluated. The criteria for designation include nationally endorsed quality measures, developed in collaboration with medical experts and professional organizations.
The criteria for becoming a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care include:
- Full-service, accredited inpatient hospital facility
- A required volume of percutaneous coronary interventions and coronary artery bypass graft surgeries and provide a full range of services including inpatient cardiac care and cardiac rehabilitation
- Sub-specialty board certification of cardiac team
- Ongoing quality management and improvement teams
- Cardiac care processes and outcomes for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, percutaneous coronary interventions, and coronary artery bypass graft surgery including evaluation of complication and mortality rates
