LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER
SHARES INTIMATE VIEWS OF FLOWERS
May 7, 2008/Iowa
City, IA: A collection of photographic works by Miranda Meyer is
currently on display at Mercy Iowa City. The 25 works share Meyer’s
principal photographic interest—flowers.
Meyer was born and raised in Iowa City and has enjoyed photography
since she was a girl. She used a 110 Instamatic for her first photos;
her subjects were the family cats. Meyer bought her first 35mm camera
when she was 15 with money she earned by detasseling corn. She went
on to major in art and photography at the University of Iowa, and
after graduating worked as a photographer for the Michigan City
News-Dispatch and Cedar Rapids Gazette. Since 2003 Meyer has worked
as a staff photographer for the University of Iowa, where she does
individual and group portraits, art and sports photography and digital
processing.
In her floral photography, Meyer strives to capture intricate structures
and surface textures from close range. When she describes her work,
she says she is careful to avoid sentimentality and sensationalism
and often frames her subjects alone, isolated and vulnerable. The
exhibit at Mercy includes every color found in the garden and close-ups
of grasses, leaves and blooms large and small.
Miranda Meyer’s works are on display on the first level of
the hospital, near the atrium. The show will continue through June
30.
