VOLUNTEERS GIVE GENEROUSLY TO MERCY IOWA CITY
April 18, 2007/Iowa City, IA: During National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 15-21, Mercy Iowa City is recognizing its 450+ volunteers, who have given more than 30,000 hours of service to Mercy in the last year.
Mercy’s volunteers, who range in age from 18 to the 90s, take part in 25 different service areas. While some volunteers work directly with patients, others staff such areas as Guest Lodging or the Gift Shop.
The Mercy Hospital Guild and its 26-member board provide leadership for the volunteer service areas. The Guild also raises funds that benefit the hospital through the Mercy Hospital Foundation.
In addition, some 50 youth volunteers, ages 14-18, serve in the hospital each summer, allowing other volunteers to take time off.
“Our volunteers really embody Mercy values, and their contributions benefit everyone at Mercy—from the patients to the employees,” says Carol Ebinger, Volunteer Services Manager. “It’s very rewarding for me personally to work with such a generous, committed group.”
