Martha Knight receives 2008 Ruth Becker Nursing Award

Iowa City, IA (May 9, 2008) –The eighth recipient of the Ruth Becker Award for Outstanding Nursing Care was announced on May 7, at a special ceremony at Mercy Iowa City. A surprised but elated Martha Knight, R.N, who works on the medical inpatient nursing unit 4 Center, was selected from among 11 nominees for the award.

Sam Becker and the late Ruth Becker initiated the award in 2001 with a gift to the Mercy Hospital Foundation. The award, which includes a $500 gift for the recipient, is announced during National Nurses Week each spring.

Ruth, a retired nurse, wished to recognize and reward exceptional nurses providing direct patient care. Candidates for the award possess outstanding clinical skills as well as compassion, empathy, patience, camaraderie, and trust.

The Margaret G. Fox Ph.D. Educational Scholarship recipient, Beth Hackfort, and the recipient of the Sister Josephus Educational Scholarship, Christine Rutter, were also recognized. The $600 scholarships were created through gifts to the Mercy Foundation to assist Mercy employees wishing to enhance their skills through further education.

Sam Becker and Margaret Fox attended this year’s ceremony.

Other Becker nominees were Bruce Anderson, Sally Conley, Rose Galer, Michael Garrels, Morgan Meiers, Carmen Miller, Doug Vincent, Angela Volkman, Mona Walker, and Sandy Wood.
