Knight receives 2008 Ruth Becker Nursing Award
Iowa City, IA (May 9,
2008) –The eighth recipient of the Ruth Becker Award for Outstanding
Nursing Care was announced on May 7, at a special ceremony at Mercy
Iowa City. A surprised but elated Martha Knight, R.N, who works
on the medical inpatient nursing unit 4 Center, was selected from
among 11 nominees for the award.
Sam Becker and the late
Ruth Becker initiated the award in 2001 with a gift to the Mercy
Hospital Foundation. The award, which includes a $500 gift for the
recipient, is announced during National Nurses Week each spring.
Ruth, a retired nurse,
wished to recognize and reward exceptional nurses providing direct
patient care. Candidates for the award possess outstanding clinical
skills as well as compassion, empathy, patience, camaraderie, and
trust.
The Margaret G. Fox Ph.D.
Educational Scholarship recipient, Beth Hackfort, and the recipient
of the Sister Josephus Educational Scholarship, Christine Rutter,
were also recognized. The $600 scholarships were created through
gifts to the Mercy Foundation to assist Mercy employees wishing
to enhance their skills through further education.

Other Becker nominees
were Bruce Anderson, Sally Conley, Rose Galer, Michael Garrels,
Morgan Meiers, Carmen Miller, Doug Vincent, Angela Volkman, Mona
Walker, and Sandy Wood.
